Investigating potential hydrological ecosystem services in urban gardens through soil amendment experiments and hydrologic models

چکیده
Abstract Among the ecosystem services provided by urban greenspace are retention and infiltration of stormwater, which decreases flooding, enhanced evapotranspiration, helps mitigate heat island effects. Some types greenspace, such as rain gardens green roofs, intentionally designed to enhance these hydrologic functions. Urban gardens, while primarily for food production aesthetic benefits, may have similar function, due high levels soil organic matter that promote water holding capacity. We quantified leachate moisture from experimental garden plots receiving various amendments (high low manure municipal compost, synthetic fertilizer, no inputs) over three years. Soil varied across treatments, with highest mean observed in lowest fertilizer. amendment treatments explained little variation weekly volume, but among compost fertilizer had volumes, slightly higher volumes. used data parameterize a simple mass balance model, focusing on input plots, well reference turfgrass plots. ran model growing seasons under ambient precipitation elevated scenarios. Garden received 12–16% greater total inputs compared because irrigation, totals were 20–30% lower climate scenarios, was 50–60% Within each scenario, difference between additional small relative differences turfgrass. Taken together, results indicate can influence retention, high-water infiltration, evapotranspiration potential soils indicates be an underappreciated benefit gardens.

Coupling climate and hydrological models: Interoperability through Web Services
Understanding regional-scale water resource systems requires understanding coupled hydrologic and climate interactions. The traditional approach in the hydrologic sciences and engineering fields has been to either treat the atmosphere as a forcing condition on the hydrologic model, or to adopt a specific hydrologic model design in order to be interoperable with a climate model. We propose here ...
متن کاملLocal and landscape drivers of predation services in urban gardens.
In agroecosystems, local and landscape features, as well as natural enemy abundance and richness, are significant predictors of predation services that may result in biological control of pests. Despite the increasing importance of urban gardening for provisioning of food to urban populations, most urban gardeners suffer from high pest problems, and have little knowledge about how to manage the...

متن کاملHydrologic dynamics and ecosystem structure.
Ecohydrology is the science that studies the mutual interaction between the hydrological cycle and ecosystems. Such an interaction is especially intense in water-controlled ecosystems, where water may be a limiting factor, not only because of its scarcity, but also because of its intermittent and unpredictable appearance. Hydrologic dynamics is shown to be a crucial factor for ecological patter...
